Family Matters is a main quest in Velen in The Witcher 3.
Your task is to help the Bloody Baron to find his family and in return, get info on Ciri.
Here’s a walkthrough of Family Matters in The Witcher 3.
This quest is suggested for level 6 and above.
Follow the baron
This quest begins right after Bloody Baron. Follow the baron to his quarters to find out what happened to his family.
Use your witcher senses
Investigate the room by using the witcher senses. Examine all of the items in red.
After finishing the investigation, you’ll see a scent of blood.
Follow the blood out of the room.
Talk to the baron about what you’ve found out.
Find the pellar’s hut
To get help, you need to find the pellar. His hut’s location is shown in the map, marked by the quest symbol.
As you arrive, you’ll be surrounded by some bandits.
Kill the bandits
Depending on your choice of words, you may have to kill the bandits.
After meeting the pellar, you’ll need to complete the quest A Princess In Distress where you have to help him bring his goat back.
Talk to the baron
Once you’re done consulting the pellar, head back to the baron.
Once you reach, you’ll see that the place is on fire. One guy will ask you to help rescue his brother in the stable.
We chose to help. It’s optional but you’ll be rewarded with coin.
Save the stable hand and the horses
To enter the stable, use the ladder and enter from the top window.
Keep going until you see the horses and the stablemaster. Jump down to the main stable area.
Open the main gate
Head towards the main gate and open it to allow all to escape.
Defeat the baron
After rescuing the horses and the stablemaster, you’ll meet the baron. In his drunken state, he’ll pick a fight with you.
Defeat him in a fistfight.
Follow the baron
He’ll then lead you to where he buried the miscarried fetus.
Attack the monster or turn botchling into lubberkin
If you choose to kill the botchling, you’ll be admonished by the baron.
The best option if you can is to allow it to turn into a lubberkin.
This means the baron has to carry the botchling back to his quarters.
Follow the baron to the castle’s entrance
Next, follow the baron as he walks to the castle.
This part is difficult as some wraiths will be summoned. They keep appearing and disappearing, making it harder.
One way is to use moon dust on them to stop them from disappearing.
After killing the wraiths, you need to immediately use Axii (influence) on the botchling to calm it down.
Once it calms down, follow the baron again. Wraiths will be summoned the second time.
Repeat the same process.
Summon the lubberkin
After the baron buries the botchling, you can just sit and wait there to summon the lubberkin.
Follow the lubberkin
Once the lubberkin is up, follow it to find Anna and her daughter.
Along the way, there’ll be plenty of creatures since it’s midnight.
Keep going until the lubberkin stops. Examine the clues around the area.
The lubberkin will move again. Follow it.
Keep going until you see a dead horse here. Examine the horse.
Continue following the lubberkin again.
You will then reach a house here. Enter the house to look for the baron’s family.
Talk to the baron
Go back to the baron to report the situation.
You’ll find him in the garden at his castle.
He’ll ask you to find out whether his family is really alive.
After agreeing to help the baron, he’ll tell a little on Ciri’s story.
Ciri’s Story
As Ciri, you need to race the baron. You can sprint all the way as the horse will reach the same time the stamina is gone.
Find Tamara
After the flashback, continue looking for Tamara, the baron’s daughter.
She’s at Oxenfurt. The location is shown in the map.
Look for her inside a house marked on the map.
She’ll refuse to go back to the baron.
Talk to the baron
Report your findings to the baron.
Find Anna
He’ll ask you to continue finding for Anna.
The only way to find Anna is to do the quest Ladies of the Wood, which is also a main quest.
Once you’ve finished the Ladies of the Wood quest, you’ll know where Anna is.
Report it back to the baron.
He’ll then tell you the continuation of Ciri’s story.
Kill the basilisk
As Ciri, you need to defeat the basilisk that attacked after the race earlier.
After the baron was taken, head towards the tower and a cutscene will load.
Help the baron or not
After the flashback, you can choose to help the baron get Anna back.
This will unlock the next quest Return to Crookback Bog.
