The Uncanny Counter is a pretty good Korean drama overall even though it doesn’t cover much of romance.
The drama finally ended with sixteen episodes about a week ago and you can catch it on Netflix.
Here’s a recap of episode 16 (ending) of The Uncanny Counter.
Episode 16 (ending) recap
The episode started immediately with the fight between the Counters and Shin Myeong-hwi. So-mun easily activates the territories as the four of them attack Myeong-hwi.
However, they discovered that he has become even stronger and even manages to break So-mun’s ankle. Ms Chu then tries to heal So-mun’s ankle but the latter stopped her and says he’s used to being a limp.
So-mun then displays even more of his powers as he manages to lift the rocks around him. He uses psychokinesis to direct the rocks towards Myeong-hwi and finally manages to pin the latter down to the ground.
Before Myeong-hwi gives up totally, he comes up with another ploy. We then see So-mun’s grandparents trapped in a nearby car and is about to be hit by a truck, all done by psychokinesis from the level four evil spirit.
Before So-mun stops the summoning, Mo-tak, Ha-na and Jang-mul helps the grandparents. Mo-tak manages to stop the truck with his bare hands while the other two tries to push the car away from the truck’s direction.
Myeong-hwi then tries yet another ploy. He changes his appearance to So-mun’s late mother to try to get So-mun to stop he summoning. Ms Chu then reminds him that it’s not his mother. So-mun finally manages to summon the evil spirit back to the Yung realm. The truck stops and the Counters are finally relieved.
In the Yung, the evil spirit that resembles Cheong-sin warns So-mun that he is cursed and everyone will die around him. So-mun says he’ll fight all evil spirits regardless. Cheong-sin then gets sucked into the portal and gets the same punishment as the other evil spirits.
Once the evil spirit is gone, all of the spirits that were devoured came back to Yung. So-mun then finds his parents among the crowd but they don’t recognize him, as they remember So-mun as an eleven year old kid. On earth, Ms Chu manages to heal So-mun’s ankle while the latter is still in Yung.
Before So-mun’s parents left to the afterlife, his mother finally recognizes So-mun. They then broke down as they hugged tearfully. So-mun apologized to them for lying about his school work on the day of the accident. He also mentions that he blamed himself all the time since the accident but he is finally relieved now. Perhaps that was what he wanted to tell his parents.
In the meantime, the other Counters met up with Cheol-jung, the Counter that So-mun replaced in the first episode. They met up in Yung but the setting was Eonni’s Noodles due to Cheol-jung’s special request. They then laughed as they caught up with each other.
In another scene, Mo-tak talked to Ms Jang to get her to testify against Myeong-hwi. Ms Jang agreed to help and also decided to surrender herself for keeping the whole thing a secret. She was burdened all the while as kept the secret that the mayor killed her friend seven years ago.
Mo-tak also talked to Ha-nul and gave him more evidence to bring down Myeong-hwi.
While the Cheong-sin evil spirit has disappeared, the mayor is still alive. He wakes up at a hospital and gets handcuffed for murder charges.
In another scene, we see Hang-gyu finally realizing that his brother was murdered and Tae-sin was involved. He initially protected Tae-sin but after hearing the truth about his brother’s death, he started to quarrel with Tae-sin. They’ll all be punished for the criminal charges.
So-mun then gets home and sees the news of his parents’ deaths being linked to the murders. His grandparents were then in shock and he tries to console them.
To help the grandparents, So-mun then looks for Ha-na. He brings Ha-na to meet his parents in Yung and the main purpose was to convey a message to the grandparents. Ha-na then transfers the message to So-mun’s grandparents when they were asleep and the grandparents were crying in their sleep as they dreamt of the reunion.
So-mun and his group of school friends then see Shin Hyeok-u apologizing to the people he bullied. Hyeok-u also decides to drop out of school. He then apologizes to Ung-min and Ju-yeon before leaving the area, as he seem repentant.
We then see the court case of Myeong-hwi and he finally admits to killing So-mun’s parents. Myeong-hwi then gets a life sentence by the court. So-mun sees Myeong-hwi and tells the latter that he’ll never forgive him.
Once all is done, Wi-gen and the rest tells the Counters that they have to go on a road trip to find evil spirits. Wi-gen also says they’ll try to find more Counters to help in the future.
While the Counters are on their road trip, they meet Jang-mul. The latter brought with him a few black vans and some suited tailors. They then took the measurements of the Counters and made them suits to replace the red jumpsuits.
At the end of the episode, we see the four Counters all dressed nicely as they tackled a group of evil spirits.
All in all, The Uncanny Counter ended on quite a happy note with a possibility of a second season as they expand their reach in South Korea. If they decide on a second season, we might see more Counters. Hopefully we get a romance line as well, as long as it doesn’t reduce the quality of the writing.
