The South Koreans have managed to create yet another interesting series on Netflix titled The Silent Sea.
There are eight episodes altogether for season 1 and we’re not sure if there’ll be a season 2 yet.
Here’s an explanation on major plot points after the ending of The Silent Sea.
Ending recap
Here’s a short recap of The Silent Sea and what the story is about. It’s basically set in the future where earth struggles with the lack of water supply. Citizens are only given scarce amounts of water according to their societal class. Many have died due to the lack of clean water and their mission is to find a way to solve it, thinking the answer is on the moon.
Five years prior to the present story, a team of 117 was placed on the Balhae Lunar Research Station which is situated on the moon. The team was led by Dr. Song Won-kyung who is Song Ji-an’s sister. She died during the accident that took place on the Balhae station five years ago.
In the present day, Song Ji-an (played by Bae Doona) who is an astrobiologist is called to join the mission to retrieve certain samples from Balhae station before it gets shut down. Captain Han (played by Gong-yoo) leads the mission as the captain, with eleven members in total. The main mission given by Director Choi is to only get the samples and leave. Ji-an on the other hand has her personal agenda of finding out what really happened on the station and also to find Luna, as instructed by her sister from a hidden file.
After reaching the station, they discovered that the accident had nothing to do with radiation leak, as mentioned by Director Choi. One of the members also got killed after coming into contact with Lunar Water, causing him to drown from within his own body.
Towards the end of the story, almost every member died, either by Lunar Water, gunshot or by Luna herself. Also present in the team were two traitors who were secretly working for the Resource Exploration for Space Mining and Planetary Development (short for RX).
In the end, Dr. Song Ji-an and Dr. Hong were rescued by the backup spaceship, together with Luna.
Did Captain Han die?
Captain Han mostly likely died as shown towards the end of the episode. As the chamber was giving an error message, he sacrificed himself to initiate airlock depressurization. Unfortunately, he was bombarded by the huge amounts of Lunar Water at the end.
He later get thrown out of the station due to the water pressure. Luna then approached him and tried to give back the badge she took from him. Captain Han however wasn’t able to take the badge as he was already dying, but he did see Luna breathing in outer space without wearing a suit. She probably reminded him of his daughter and the promise he made to her.
Towards the end, Han’s suit lost power and he probably died from there.
Who is Luna?
Luna is one of the many clones Dr. Song Won-kyung and her team made. Cloning was illegal and they used Luna clones to test the Lunar Water. All but one of them died from the Lunar Water.
The surviving Luna was known as Luna 073, which means she’s the 73rd clone.
What is the Lunar Water / sample all about?
Lunar Water (aka the sample) is probably water they found on the moon, but we’re not sure how they were extracted in the first place.
Although it’s very similar to water found on earth, it’s extremely dangerous and has some minor differences, like the freezing point of the water.
As shown several times in the drama, Lunar Water easily kills a person. If the water enters the person’s eyes or other vulnerable spots, he will get infected. The water then multiplies inside the body when it comes into contact with blood or other fluids.
This results in a person dying from drowning as the water builds up from within the body. The water stops multiplying after the person dies.
Who are the RX group?
The RX stands for Resource Exploration for Space Mining and Planetary Development, and they seem to give problems to governments all around the world. One of the members also called them a “resource mafia”.
They managed to infiltrate the team by sending two members, one who is a co-pilot and the other is Ryu Tae-suk, the chief engineer. We’re not sure who is behind RX, but we may get an idea if a second season is made.
What was Director Choi’s mission really about?
Unlike Dr. Song Ji-an who wanted to investigate the space station and find out how her sister died, Choi had a different mission.
She knew about the incident caused by the Lunar Water and ordered the team to only retrieve the samples. Their main intention is to bury the whole incident as it would cause a huge uproar. Also, they wanted the Lunar Water for further experimentation.
Who rescued the survivors?
At the end of episode 8, we see a space ship coming down for Dr. Song, Dr. Hong and Luna. All we know are that Mr. Kim sent one space ship, while the RX group also sent one to retrieve the samples.
It should only be either of them. It’s possible that the RX ship was destroyed by the government’s ship as the latter knew about the RX’s involvement.
