The New South is the first mission given by Dutch at the second camp in Red Dead Redemption 2.
You guys aim to go for fishing (with Hosea) but there was a change of plans in the middle.
Here’s a walkthrough of The New South in RDR 2.
To start the mission, talk to Dutch who’s at the lakeside.
Follow Dutch and Hosea
Grab your horse and follow Dutch and Hosea to the fishing spot.
On your journey, you will meet the lawmen of this area who are carrying some wanted men.
During the cutscene, the wanted men will escape and you have to chase after them, trying to get on the good side of the lawmen.
Stop the wanted men
Take the deputy with you and chase after the train. Keep riding fast and get close to it.
At one point the train will reach the station and slow down, and you have to ride your horse beside it.
Get close enough and you have to jump on the train to stop the wanted men.
Fight them using your bare hands only. Dutch doesn’t want any weapons to be used.
For the last guy (Anderson), knock him out and carry him out of the train.
You will then have to stow him on your horse and follow the deputy back to town, to meet the chief.
After putting the guy down at the sheriff’s place, your role here is done. Trelawny was one of the captives and you’ve set him free.
You can either choose to go fishing or just go home. Personally, I chose to go fishing.
Go fishing
Follow Hosea to the fishing spot.
At the place, you will find a boat there and the three of you will bring the boat to the lake.
Keep rowing the boat until you reach the yellow marker in the lake. Stop there and you can start fishing.
Use the lake lure bait for your fishing rod. At this point, just fish to your heart’s content. I caught like 4 or 5 fishes here.
If you wish to stop, just keep your rod by pressing L1.
How to fish
Fishing is pretty easy, just cast your rod and the distance depends on how long you hold R2. Remember to hold L2 at the beginning.
To get the fish to bite, rotate R3 slowly. Once it has bitten use L3 to move your rod to tire the fish if it’s struggling.
When it stops struggling (meaning vibration stops), just rotate R3 to reel it in. After awhile it will struggle again, and you have to use L3 to tire the fish.
Rinse and repeat. You can choose to keep the fish or throw it back to the lake.
After keeping your rod, the gang will want to go back to camp as well.
Return to camp
Row your boat all the way back to your new camp site. The exact location is shown in the map above.
At this point, just enjoy the ride there as the gang will start singing songs.
And that’s it. If you wish to get a perfect score, you need to do the following items:
- Knock out Anders Anderson without taking a hit
- Catch and return Anders Anderson to jail within 5 minutes 30 seconds
- Catch a fish with Dutch and Hosea
