The Impending Storm is a main mission in Borderlands 3 that is based in Athenas.
Your task is to get to Athenas and meet Maya pertaining to the vault fragment.
Here’s a walkthrough of The Impending Storm in Borderlands 3.
This mission begins immediately after Hostile Takeover.
Talk to Lilith
The first thing you need to do is to get back to Sanctuary and talk to Lilith.
Navigate to Athenas
Use the controls to navigate to Athenas.
Use drop pod
Get to the drop pod at the bottom of the ship to go to Athenas.
Meet Maya
Once you’re in Athenas, head over to Maya’s location. It’s shown in the map below.
On the way, you’ll have to deal with the Maliwan soldiers.
To proceed further at one part, ring the bell.
After reaching the courtyard, you will be introduced to Maya, another Siren who is Firehawk’s friend.
Talk to her after the cutscene.
Follow Maya
Follow her to the next area. Kill the soldiers who are on the way.
Keep going until you reach this gate.
Once again, ring the bell at the side of the gate.
In the next area, annihilate all of the enemies as well.
Once the area is secure, follow Maya again.
Another bell will be here. Ring the bell to proceed.
Find Ava
Your next objective is to look for Ava, Maya’s apprentice. Her location is also shown in the map below.
Once again, plenty of Maliwan enemies in the way.
Take them all out and continue heading towards Ava.
She’ll be at the front of the cemetery. Talk to her to proceed.
Follow Ava
Follow Ava to go grave-digging for some eridium. Eliminate all of the enemies in the graveyard first.
In the first building, you’ll find some eridium.
Just enter and loot the eridium. No enemies inside.
Once you come out, more Maliwan forces will come. These ones are the heavies. They are harder to kill.
In the next building, you will find many nests. Once you enter, the ratches will start coming out. There’s no eridium inside.
Kill all of the ratches.
Destroy ratch nest
In the third building, there will be ratches coming out as well.
This time, a ratch nest (bigger ratch) will spawn too. Kill them all.
Loot the eridium that is dropped by the ratch nest.
Follow Ava again
After getting all of the eridium, follow Ava. More enemy forces will appear, but you’ll deal with them later.
Meet Maya in courtyard
Next up, you’ll have to meet Maya in the courtyard.
The location is shown in the map.
Along the way, destroy all of the Maliwan forces. You’ll meet her at the courtyard and you two have to kill all of the Maliwan forces.
Defeat Captain Traunt (boss)
Finally, you’ll meet Captain Traunt, who heads the Maliwan forces in Athenas. You’ll do this without Maya.
This guy has a really thick shield and uses mostly cryo (ice) attacks.
Just keep running around while gunning him to avoid getting frost damage.
He shoots all of those huge icicles that may be difficult to avoid as it follows you.
One fast way of melting his shield quickly is by using a heavy weapon like an incinerator.
If you’re using Moze, you can use the Iron Bear for awhile to reduce his shield / HP.
After Traunt dies, he’ll drop plenty of loot as usual.
Give eridium to Maya
Next, give the eridium you retrieved earlier to Maya.
She’ll use her abilities to open the vault door.
Follow Maya into the vault. Inside, there are a couple of unique chests that aren’t too obvious.
Open them and you’ll get better loot.
You should find some pretty cool guns inside.
Get vault key fragment
At the end of the vault, there’s another chest where you can get the vault key fragment.
Give vault key to Tannis
Go back to the Sanctuary to pass the key to Tannis. She’s in her lab.
Talk to Lilith
Finally, talk to Lilith to complete this mission.
