The Frightened Engineer is a side quest in The Outer Worlds.
Your task is to help Thomas Kemp find three volumes of the Guide to Mechanical Engineering.
Here’s a walkthrough of The Frightened Engineer in The Outer Worlds.
To begin the quest, speak to Thomas Kemp who is in the Botanical Lab.
The general location of all 3 volumes are shown in the map above.
Volume 1 location
The first volume can be found inside the Emerald Vale Community Center.
Right outside the center, there will be a couple of marauders. After entering the center, you will meet more marauders.
Take them out first.
Find the stairs to go up. You will find the first volume to the Mechanical Engineering guide upstairs.
Volume 2 location
As for the second volume, you will find it inside Edgewater itself. Go to the Saltuna Cannery main building where Reed Tobson is.
Instead of using the elevator, use the stairs and you’ll find volume 2 on the first floor of the building.
Volume 3 location
The third engineering volume can be found inside the Geothermal Power Plant.
You will come here as part of the main quest Comes Now The Power.
Inside the power plant, you will reach a circular area where you will see flames moving within a big tube. You need to go all the way down to the basement, using the stairs and 2 different ladders.
There is also an NPC here that can help you to disable the mechanical bots. The volume 3 book is just near the guy.
Return to Thomas Kemp
Once you have all 3 volumes, go back to Kemp at the Botanical Lab.
The side quest completes here. You will get an Electro-Charged Surface mod as a special reward.
