Steel type Pokemon are great against many types, including ice and dragon Pokemon.
However, they are weak against fire, ground and fighting type Pokemon. That said, you may still want to keep a steel Pokemon in your team.
Here are some of the best steel type Pokemon among all seven generations.
1. Metagross
Metagross is the evolved form of Metang and is both a psychic and steel type legendary Pokemon from the 3rd generation. It can further evolve into Mega Metagross.
Metagross is actually the fusion of two Metangs, which gives Metagross four different brains. Even though it’s huge in stature and is very strong physically, it’s also one of the most intelligent Pokemon, even better than super computers. Metagross usually analyzes its opponents before battle using its intelligence.
It has pretty high overall base stats, with attack and defense being its highest. When it mega evolves into Mega Metagross, the attack and defense goes up even much higher, and the overall stats are one of the top.
2. Aggron
Next up is Aggron, another beast from the 3rd generation. This Pokemon is both a steel and rock type and is the evolved form of Lairon. Aggron can also evolve into Mega Aggron.
It is usually found near mountains and aggressively protects its territory. Aggron usually feeds on iron and is capable of digging through bedrocks and tunnels. Aggron’s horn is normally used to determine its age, by seeing the length of it.
It has overall average base stats, with an incredibly high defense attribute, which also makes it an amazing defensive Pokemon. When it mega evolves, Aggron’s defense is out of this world!
3. Steelix
Steelix is sort of the icon of steel type Pokemon in the past, and it was introduced in the 2nd generation. It’s like Onix, but made of steel, and can even mega evolve into Mega Steelix.
This giant Pokemon is normally seen in mountains or in caves as it is capable of burrowing deep inside it. Apparently the underground heat and pressure in those caves together with an iron rich diet has made its body super hard, even tougher than diamonds.
Steelix has an incredible defense as well, just like Aggron. Its other stats aren’t that great. When it turns into Mega Steelix, it has the same defense stat as Mega Aggron.
4. Lucario
Lucario is a fighting and steel type Pokemon from the 4th generation. It is the evolved form of Riolu and can further mega evolve into Mega Lucario.
This rabbit-like Pokemon is considered to be a very loyal Pokemon and has a sense of justice. However, it’s also deemed to have a lot of pride. You can normally find this Pokemon in mountains.
It has overall decent base stats, with attack and special attack being its best attributes. When it mega evolves, these stats increases even further, making it a pretty strong steel Pokemon.
5. Skarmory
Next up is Skarmory, a flying and steel type Pokemon from the 2nd generation. Up to the 7th generation, it’s not known to be able to evolve.
It resembles a steel-like bird with huge wings and its wings are actually capable of growing back even if it gets injured. As a steel Pokemon, its feathers are as sharp as blades. Due to possible rusting, it usually avoids water.
Skarmory has overall average base stats, but it does have a pretty high defense attribute.
6. Dialga
Dialga is a legendary Pokemon from the 4th generation and is both a steel and dragon type. It is also part of the Sinnoh trio, alongside Giratina and Palkia.
Like the others in the trio, Dialga can warp time, meaning it can stop time, slow it down or speed it up. It usually lives in a different dimension as well. Dialga often has conflicts against Palkia, the other legendary.
As expected, it has really high base stats, with special attack being its strongest point.
7. Aegislash
Next on the list of best steel type Pokemon is Aegislash. This Pokemon is known for being more of a royal guard. It is both a steel and ghost type Pokemon from the 6th generation.
It is known to have served many generations of kings, and resembles a blade and a shield. Aegislash has different forms, i.e. offensive or defensive. It also has the power to manipulate both Pokemon and people, as it has ghostly attacks too.
Aegislash’s base stats depends on whether it’s on shield forme or blade forme. If it’s on shield forme, the special defense and defense increases tremendously. Likewise, if it’s on the offensive, its special attack and attack goes up a lot.
8. Scizor
Scizor is the evolved form of Scyther and is a bug and steel type Pokemon from the 2nd generation. Scizor can further mega evolve into Mega Scizor, making it much stronger.
This Pokemon has a steel hard body with claws or pincers that are so strong that it can crush any object. Scizor has wings but can’t really fly. It flaps its wings just to regulate the body temperature.
Scizor has overall decent base stats, with attack and defense being the highest. Mega Scizor also has a really high attack and defense, and is much stronger than Scizor.
9. Mawile
Next up is Mawile, a fairy type and steel type Pokemon from the 3rd generation. It used to be a pure steel Pokemon in the previous generations. Mawile can also evolve into Mega Mawile.
This Pokemon has a rather odd appearance, with a huge crocodile-like jaw at the back of its head. It normally shows its back to its opponents since its giant jaws are at the back and such jaws can swallow preys.
Mawile doesn’t have high base stats, and Mega Mawile isn’t that much stronger too. However, Mega Mawile does have good attack and defense base stats.
10. Magnezone
Last but not least is Magnezone, the evolved form of Magneton. This Pokemon is both an electric and steel type, and was first seen in the 4th generation.
Magnezone uses magnetic powers to control how it floats in the air, and can even use anti-gravity powers. In the cartoon, Magnezone can even lift people using such anti-gravity capabilities. This Pokemon is usually mistaken for a UFO due to its appearance.
Magnezone has overall decent base stats, with high special attack and defense attributes.
