StumbleUpon is closing after 16 years and is now moving to Mix. This was announced by Garrett Camp, the founder of StumbleUpon (est. 2001).
Both StumbleUpon and StumbleUpon ads will be closed on June 30, 2018.
For those who never heard of it, StumbleUpon is a content discovery platform that allows users to read all kinds of articles from one website or mobile app.
All users had to do was to press the “Stumble” button which brings you to a totally different article. The idea was refreshing back then and it was used by over 40 million users and served almost 60 billion stumbles.
StumbleUpon was actually the pioneer of content discovery, i.e. even before huge social media networks were mainstream.
Many bloggers in the past used StumbleUpon as a method of getting more traffic to their blogs. Many also abandoned the platform due to the high bounce rate it caused.
As users stumble to a wholly different article each time, the bounce rate of websites would have increased.
Having a high bounce rate on a site is not SEO friendly, so not everyone wanted to use it.
Why is StumbleUpon closing?
This brings us to the question, why is this 16-year old platform closing soon?
Garrett Camp said this:
“But it’s now time to focus on the future, and create the next discovery platform that will uncover hidden gems we would never think to search for.”
Honestly, StumbleUpon lost popularity in recent years and I never heard of it until I was seriously into blogging.
Perhaps the concept no longer works and Garrett wants to try something new for content discovery.
He said this about Mix.com:
“Mix.com combines social and semantic personalization into one streamlined experience. It also makes it easier for people to organize content into meaningful collections. This will help you find obscure but interesting content that has been recommended by people you know and trust.”
As technology improves, there are newer and better ways for content discovery. Take Pinterest for instance. They’re highly popular for a good reason.
In fact, Mix.com does give a little of the Pinterest + Flipboard vibe.
You can move your account from StumbleUpon to Mix.com
Just head over to Mix and sign up using your StumbleUpon account if you wish to transfer it.
Otherwise, there are other ways to sign up if you want to start afresh.
Their mobile app is also ready for use. I’ve been using the Android app for Mix and it has been pretty smooth so far.
I actually wrote an article on Mix.com if you want to know more about Mix.
Use up your ads credits
As the platform is closing soon, use up all of your ads credits to drive traffic to your blog.
Otherwise, you may lose all of them.
In a nutshell
While it’s sad that StumbleUpon is closing next month, we’re hoping that Mix.com becomes a success as a content discovery platform.
If you’re a blogger, you should head on over to the platform. They have incentives for curators!
Furthermore, it’s hard to get noticed on Pinterest these days. Maybe it’s time for you to be an early adopter on Mix.
